The snow fed Mountain
Rivers that trace their origins to the Himalayas, descend
from their icy heights across high cliff-suspended gorges
and tortuous, boulder- strewn beds before they eddy into a
smooth flow across the great Indo-Gangetic plains.
As they cut against rocky banks, crashing
into rocks, and falling down caverns and breaking into white
water rapids, the waters foam and swirl and fall in a thunderous
din. The awesome might of the river in these parts and their
apparent navigational invincibility has given impetus to the
sport of river running.
The most generous, perhaps are the Ganga,
which offers the exhilaration of river Adventure to the professional
and the amateur.
Snaking along the lunar landscape of Ladakh,
the Indus offers the amateur a strikingly different experience.
The most popular waters for river running
are restricted to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, to the Garhwal
Himalayas in Uttaranchal and on the four rivers of Himachal
Pradesh. While the last is still being fully discovered, the
Teesta in Sikkim is also offering excellent, but limited waters,
as it has a large number of portage points where rafts have
to be taken out of the water.
