A Camel Safari isaa one of the most
adventurous and novel ways to explore the desert.
It is also a singular opportunity to get glimpse of
traditional Indian life in the desert, with all the
beauty, inspite of the hardships and the desolation.
The Desert State of Rajasthan offers exotic encounter
with the outdoors in this form of desert expedition.
Camel Safari trace their origins to
the age of overland trade between India and China,
when Camel caravans would journey along established
trade routes laden with spices, herbs and jewels.
Aided by the warmth of the hospitable villager’s
en-route, it becomes a once in a lifetime experience,
though the swinging gait of the Camel is neither very
comfortable, nor easy to get used to. Camping is usually
done during night in this type of tour.
The best safaris are in the heart of the Thar, around
Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner in Rajasthan. Besides
the desert heartland, the most exciting option for
it would be in the Shekhawati region, taking in such
towns as Ramgarh, Nawalgarh, Dundlod, Mandawa and
Churu. A short Camel Safari in the Nubra valley of
Ladakh with Bacterian double humped Camels can be
fun.
These camels were mean of transport
on Ladakh – Yarkand (Turkamanistan) trade route
in ancient days
